Primary

The atmosphere in King Richard III Primary School is one that reflects the happiness of its pupils and staff and their respect for each other, and is at the heart of everything we do.

The education offered at our college is designed to meet the challenges of today´s society. Our aim is to produce happy, creative pupils who try to achieve their full potential, whilst enriching the lives of others. A broad balanced and challenging curriculum is offered, and small classes are maintained. The pupils are encouraged to discover and develop many talents and skills through musical and sporting activities as well as excursions and residential trips. Emphasis is placed on firm discipline, good behaviour and respect for others.

The Primary School follows the English National Curriculum through Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, providing opportunities for all children to learn and achieve, and offering considerable support where needed. Additional subjects such as Music, Spanish, Catalan, German, French and Computing are taught by specialist teachers and Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are administered.

Spanish is an integral part of the curriculum for all students.

The programme of study at all stages responds to the diverse learning needs of all our pupils, providing them with relevant and appropriately challenging work. Pupils are encouraged to be self-reliant, to explore their talents and to strive for excellence. The curriculum offered allows them to develop their intellectual curiosity and to make informed decisions. They are given opportunities to lead, as well as to be part of a team and to appreciate cultural diversity.

Structured support is offered to enable all pupils to learn as effectively as possible. Most importantly our success as a school lies in our ability to support each individual child.

Early Years Foundation Stage

The seven areas of learning are:

  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development
  • All pupils study Spanish

Key Stages 1 & 2

Years 1 to 6  >  Age 5 to 11

KS1 & KS2 curriculum subjects are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Computing
  • Art & Design
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Modern Foreign Languages: Spanish, French (from Yr. 4), German (from Yr. 4)
  • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Development)
  • Catalan (Yr. 2 upwards)

Every pupil in the Primary School follows a structured, comprehensive Spanish Programme of study, our aim being fluency in the written and spoken word for students studying Spanish as a foreign language, and a high level of competency for our native Spanish students.

Our pupils in EYFS have a structured activity each day in Spanish. From Year 2, Spanish classes are split in two: Spanish for native and proficient speakers and Spanish for non-natives. From Year 5, classes are also split in this way for Catalan. In this way, classes are kept very small and individual learning programmes can be provided.
