The study of English at King Richard III College, Mallorca, follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales, in a format tailored to the varied needs of the international community of students at our school. English Language is taught alongside English Literature and the study of one informs the other throughout the years in Secondary School. We cater to all levels of English ability: first language, proficient second language speakers and complete beginners.

Throughout Key Stage 3, Years 7 to 9, students learn to explore the variety of the English language. Study includes literary analysis of novels such as A Christmas Carol by Dickens, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Mogarian and Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Students also study classic drama, including Shakespeare's Macbeth, J. B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls and a dramatised version of Bram Stoker's Dracula. In addition students are introduced to poetry from across a range of cultures.

Language study is closely linked to literary and focuses on writing in a range of key styles, for specific audiences and purposes.

Speaking and listening exercises are used throughout the courses to both build students' confidence and communication skills.

At Key Stage 4 students prepare for their IGCSE First Language English and IGCSE English Literature qualifications. Students may also be prepared for IGCSE English as a Second Language. All qualifications are accredited by the Univeristy of Cambridge International Examinations Board.

Study builds upon the skills learned at Key Stage 3, with students preparing for the Reading paper and the Directed Writing and Composition for the language components as well as set texts for the literature. This include texts such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and an anthology of selected poetry.

Key Stage 5 study consists of the Edexcel AS and A2 level combined English Language and Literature syllabus.

AS level focuses on learning to critically analyse the use of language in speech, introducing a broad spectrum of critical terminology, before moving on to analyse how writers use spoken language features to construct 'voice' in written texts, including the literary study of James Joyce's Dubliners. A coursework portfolio is created, based on the theme 'The Gothic and Supernatural', using Bram Stoker's Dracula, the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and the poems of Edgar Allen Poe as inspiration for two original pieces of writing, one for a reading audience and the other for a listening audience. The portfolio also includes a critical commentary reflecting on the creation of each student's own work.

At A2 level the skills learned at AS are applied to an ever-varying and more complex set of literary and non-literary texts. Again there is an emphasis on original writing with students producing a coursework portfolio comprising a literary text and a non-literary text, both inspired by the theme 'Caught in the Dilemma of Duty' which is introduced by The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Again, students must add to their portfolio a critical commentary on the writing process. The course also includes the close literary analysis of two plays, Shakespeare's Othello and Peter Schaffer's Equus.
